Cancer Causing Agents Found in 12 Cakes from Bengaluru Bakeries

In a shocking revelation, the Karnataka government recently issued a stern warning to the public after finding harmful, cancer-causing agents in 12 cakes sold across various Bengaluru bakeries. This discovery has raised serious concerns about food safety and the health risks associated with consuming products containing artificial food dyes. Let’s delve into the details of the findings and what this means for consumers.
Discovery of Harmful Substances in Cakes
The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has been conducting extensive tests on various food products to ensure compliance with food safety standards. Out of 235 cake samples collected from bakeries across Bengaluru, 12 were found to contain artificial colours that exceed permissible safety limits. The harmful substances detected include:
Sunset Yellow FCF
Allura Red
Ponceau 4R
Tartrazine
Carmoisine
These artificial colours are often used to enhance the visual appeal of popular cakes like red velvet and black forest. However, their excessive use poses significant health risks, including cancer and other serious medical conditions.
Karnataka Government’s Response
The discovery prompted swift action from the Karnataka government, which has been increasingly focused on food safety issues in recent months. Food safety commissioner Srinivas K issued a warning to bakeries across the state, cautioning them against using unsafe chemicals in their products. He emphasized that bakeries found to be in violation of food safety regulations will face stringent penalties.
“We’ve detected harmful, cancer-causing substances in some of the cake samples tested, and these additives are strictly regulated under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 and related food safety regulations from 2011,” said a senior government official.
Health Risks of Artificial Food Colours

Artificial food colors like Allura Red, Sunset Yellow, and Tartrazine are commonly used in bakery products to enhance the appearance of cakes and confectionery items. However, studies have linked these dyes to various health risks. Long-term consumption of high levels of artificial food dyes has been associated with an increased risk of cancer. Additionally, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, ranging from mild skin rashes to more severe respiratory issues. Tartrazine, in particular, has been linked to hyperactivity and behavioral problems in children, raising concerns about its widespread use.
Stringent Action Ahead for Bakeries
The government has urged all bakeries in Karnataka to strictly follow food safety regulations. Bakers are encouraged to use natural colours and flavourings to ensure that their products are safe for consumption. Those who fail to comply with these standards will be subject to legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Food Safety Scrutiny Extends to Other Products
This is not the first instance of the Karnataka government’s food safety department taking action against unsafe food practices. In recent months, they have extended their scrutiny to various other food items. In August, inspections of paneer and khoya revealed that certain samples were substandard. Additionally, food stalls at railway stations and tourist destinations were found to be non-compliant with safety regulations.
The discovery of cancer-causing agents in cakes has set off alarm bells in Bengaluru’s bakery industry and beyond. With food safety emerging as a major public health concern, it’s crucial for bakeries to adopt safer practices and comply with the guidelines set forth by the Food Safety and Standards Act. Consumers, too, must be vigilant about the products they purchase and prefer natural and safer alternatives whenever possible.
